A property firm, Messrs Makarios Luxury Properties Limited, has emphasised the need for strict adherence to building standards to curb incidents of building collapse, while delivering quality housing to Nigerians at home and in the diaspora.
Chairman of the firm, Matthew Ashimolowo, made the call at the official launch and groundbreaking ceremony of Makarios Champions Place and The Villagio Apartments in Lagos. He reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering homes that combine functionality, liveability and luxury within a secure environment.
Ashimolowo noted that with Lagos projected to grow into one of the largest cities globally by 2050, with an estimated population of about 40 million, there is an urgent need for developers to prioritise quality construction. He added that the city’s growing economic strength presents opportunities for real estate investment, particularly for diaspora Nigerians seeking reliable housing assets, including short-let and Airbnb options.
He urged Nigerians to invest in the country, noting that Lagos accounts for a significant share of national economic activity. According to him, the city contributes about 60 per cent of business activities and over 65 per cent of Value Added Tax (VAT) revenue in the country.
Makarios Champions Place, located along the Lekki-Epe Expressway, sits on about 23 hectares (approximately 58 acres) and comprises between 450 and 470 plots, with about 70 already subscribed. The development will feature 11 high-rise towers, each about 10 floors, offering between 16 and 22 apartments per building, with a mix of two, three, four and five-bedroom units.
The estate is also planned to include a range of facilities such as a water park, gardens, retail mall, restaurants, entertainment centres, central sewage system, reliable water supply, waste management systems, recreational spaces, solar-powered electricity and a well-connected road network.
Ashimolowo stressed that the firm’s reputation is tied to delivering safe, durable buildings. “We are committed to maintaining standards. We have a name to protect, and we will not build structures that could fail.
Each building will be supported by deep piling systems to ensure structural integrity,” he said.
He explained that the development is designed to promote community living, with a concept built around “family, friendship, fun and football,” reflected in the estate’s layout and street naming. The Villagio Apartments, he added, will offer a more compact luxury option within the larger estate, described as “an estate within an estate.”
Chief Operating Officer of Makarios Champions Place, Oluwafemi Odunlami, described the groundbreaking as a defining moment for the firm, marking the transition from vision to execution. He said the projects are strategically aligned with the rapid growth of the Lekki-Epe corridor and designed to create long-term value for investors and residents.
“We are not just unveiling projects; we are demonstrating our commitment to delivery. These developments represent opportunity, quality and forward-thinking investment,” he said.
Managing Director of the firm, Oluwafemi Adeniba, added that the company is leveraging global best practices to address Nigeria’s housing challenges. He said the focus goes beyond construction to creating integrated communities that combine security, functionality, serenity and investment value.
