Former Governor of Kano State, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally resigned from the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) with immediate effect.

In a press statement announcing his resignation on Sunday, Kwankwaso expressed his profound gratitude for the honour and privilege of serving as the NNPP’s national leader and its presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.

As a committed and bonafide member of the party, he, however, admitted that it was not an easy decision to make.

“However, considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” Kwankwaso explained.

“I extend my deepest appreciation to the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed and the entire National Working Committee for their steadfast support throughout my time.”

He also thanked the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and all levels of leadership across the NNPP — from the ward to the state level, as well as the legacy members of the party and all followers of the Kwankwasiyya Movement for their dedication and commitment to its shared mission.

“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.

Barring any last-minute change, reports say Kwankwaso is set to defect to the opposition African Democratic Congress (ADC) to consolidate his political strength.

Subsequently, he has directed his Kwankwasiyya loyalists to decamp with him to his new political platform.

In a statement released on Saturday night and signed by the spokesperson of the Kwankwasiyya Movement, Dr. Habibu Mohammad, it was confirmed that Kwankwaso will officially join the ADC on Monday.

According to the statement, “The Kwankwasiyya Movement wishes to formally inform all its members across Nigeria and the general public that our Supreme Leader, Senator Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has concluded all necessary arrangements to join the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

“In furtherance of this decision, he will officially register with the party on Monday, March 30, 2026, at his residence, Gidan Kwankwasiyya, Miller Road, Kano, by 12 p.m.,” the statement read.
