The Kwara State Government has inaugurated a state committee on schools’ land and boundary recovery to reclaim encroached lands belonging to public secondary schools across the three senatorial districts.
A statement by the Press Secretary, Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, Peter Amogbonjaye, made available on Saturday, said the initiative aimed to address growing concerns over encroachment on school properties.
Inaugurating the committee on Friday at the ministry’s headquarters in Ilorin, the Commissioner for Education and Human Capital Development, Dr Lawal Olohungbebe, represented by the Permanent Secretary, Mrs Olanrewaju Rebecca Bake, said: “The committee is established to tackle systemic encroachment on secondary school lands by private individuals and organisations, ensuring government schools retain their legally designated spaces for learning and development.”
The commissioner added that the committee’s activities will cover all government-owned secondary schools across the three senatorial districts, with priority given to institutions where principals, communities, and Parent-Teacher Associations had submitted formal complaints.
Olohungbebe explained that the committee would identify and map affected school lands, conduct physical site inspections, determine the extent of encroachment, and provide accurate documentation for recovery efforts.
He added that the committee was expected to verify titles by cross-referencing physical boundaries with original survey plans and digital records held by the Kwara State Geographical Information Service.
He commended Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq for prioritising education and approving the committee’s inauguration, describing the move as a decisive step toward protecting school assets statewide.
The committee is expected to complete its primary assignment and submit its final report within six weeks.
The inauguration was attended by representatives from the Ministry of Education and Human Capital Development, the Kwara State Teaching Service Commission, the Kwara State Primary Education Board, KWAGIS, and the Ministry of Justice.
