THE Ogun State Police Command has confirmed the arrest of Nigerian TikTok star Mirabel over allegations that she raised a false report of rape, as investigations into the contentious sexual assault claim continue.
DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, the command’s spokesperson, told SaharaReporters on Friday that the social media personality is currently in police custody.
“She is with us now, and the investigation is ongoing,” Babaseyi said.
Asked if Mirabel could face prosecution should the investigation prove the allegation was fabricated, Babaseyi did not give a definitive answer, emphasizing that the investigation’s outcome would guide next steps.Nigerian Law Seminars
“The facts will tell at the conclusion of our investigation,” he stated.
The arrest marks a dramatic turn in a case that has sparked nationwide controversy and fierce debate on social media.
Initially, the Ogun State Police had treated Mirabel, who goes by @mirab351 on TikTok, as a complainant when she reported an alleged sexual assault. Her online claims—that an unidentified man broke into her apartment on February 15, restrained her, and threatened to use his family’s influence to block justice—went viral, drawing public outrage and calls for swift action.
Following the allegations, the Commissioner of Police directed officers at the Ibafo Division to contact her immediately. Mirabel later visited the station, gave preliminary statements, and underwent a medical examination before the case was transferred to Ogijo Police Station, where the incident reportedly occurred. Authorities noted she received medical attention due to her fragile emotional and physical state.
Babaseyi reiterated that the police command remains committed to uncovering the truth. He stressed that while perpetrators of sexual assault will be prosecuted if allegations are substantiated, Nigerian law also criminalizes giving false information to law enforcement.
“If she’s telling the truth, the perpetrator will be arrested and charged appropriately,” Babaseyi said.
“If not, the law punishes anyone who provides false information, making them legally culpable.”Law Practice Management
