The Ogun State Government has warned residents against constructing illegal structures on walkways and erecting shanties along highways across the state.

The government also cautioned residents against attacking town planning officials in the course of their duties, stressing that anyone found culpable would face the full weight of the law.

The General Manager of the Ogun State Planning Development and Permit Authority, TPl. Itunu Jolaoluwa, issued the warning while featuring on a live television programme, “The Roundtable,” aired on Ogun State Television (OGTV). She spoke on the theme, “Building Right” in Ogun State.

Jolaoluwa stated that all building activities in the state must comply with established planning laws and regulations, noting that the state is guided by its Urban and Regional Planning and Development Law, 2022.

She disclosed that any form of development without an approved planning permit remains illegal, adding that erecting structures within road setbacks and rights of way, as well as the construction of shanties along highways and expressways, is prohibited.

The General Manager explained that the state has simplified the planning permit process, noting that approvals for residential developments are ready within seven days, while commercial permits are processed within fourteen days, provided all requirements are duly met.

She urged residents and developers to visit the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, the Ogun State Planning Development and Permit Authority, or any zonal planning office closest to them for guidance on planning procedures and to apply for the necessary permits before commencing any development.

Jolaoluwa further observed that compliance with planning regulations has improved significantly due to sustained sensitisation efforts by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, assuring that public enlightenment campaigns would continue.
