Operatives of Kano State Police Command have arrested three suspects for the brutal killings of a mother and her six children, less than 24 hours after the dastardly act in the ancient city.
Among the prime suspect already in the police net include Umar Auwalu, a 23 years old, said to be a nephew to late mother of six.
Other accomplices apprehended in the murder are Isyaku Yakubu, ‘m’, AKA ‘Chebe’, 40 years old, and Yakubu Abdulaziz, ‘m’, AKA ‘Wawo’, 21 years old.
They were arrested during the sting operation directly supervised by Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD.
A statement by CSP Abdullahi Haruna Kiyawa, police spokesperson on Sunday, the suspects admitted to have responsible for the gruesome murder of the seven members of a family in Kano.
Although, the release did not indicated further information as to why did and or, was behind, Auwalu embarked on the killings.
According to the release, “The Kano State Police Command, acting on the directives of the Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, PhD, NPM, has leveraged intelligence-led policing to apprehend three (03) suspected masterminds behind the brutal murder of a housewife and her six (06) children in Dorayi Chiranchi Quarters, Kano, on 17th January, 2026.
“Under the direction of Commissioner of Police, CP Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, PhD, a team of police crack operatives successfully arrested the suspects.
They were arrested during a Sting Operation that lasted between 10pm of 17th January 2026 and 4am of 18th January 2026.
“The leader of the syndicate, Umar Auwalu, a nephew to the deceased housewife, confessed to the crime and also admitted that the same syndicate has carried out a series of gruesome killings and attacks in the recent past, including the killing and burning of two housewives at Tudun Yola Quarters, Kano.
“Recoveries from the suspects included four clothes with blood stains, the deceased’s two mobile phones, a Cutlass, a Club (Gora), and some amount of money robbed at the scene, as well as dangerous weapons. Investigation is in progress”. Kiyawa said in the release.
The tragic incident ensued when the killers invaded the private residence of the deceased in Dorayi Chiranci quarter in the city, slaughtered the mother, six children, including an infant child dumped in a well.
According to a resident, Isiyaka Yakubu, the entire community were thrown in mourning at the early hours of Saturday when a neighbor broke out of the victims house in loud noise, seeking neighbors help.
“This is worrisome and unexplained. The ugly incident occurred in the early hours and everyone is under tense situation now. The neighbor that came out of the house told us she found every one in the house in pool of their blood. Later we discovered a small baby was thrown inside the well in the compound.
“We have reported the case to the police and I think action will be taken to unravel those behind the dastardly act. The entire Dorayi Chiranci and Dorayi Babba cannot sleep with our eyes close. This has never happened in this area before”. An eyewitness reported.
Kiyawa explained that victims of brutal murder include Fatima Abubakar (35), mother and her six children, were attacked by unknown hoodlums who broke into their house.
“The Kano State Police Command received a distress call at approximately 12:10pm on January 17, 2025, reporting a brutal attack on the household of Haruna Bashir at Dorayi Charanchi Quarters.
“Bodies were evacuated and rushed to Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, Kano, where they were pronounced dead. A team led by ACP Wada Jarma, Assistant Commissioner of Police, Criminal Investigation Department (CID), was instructed to conduct a thorough investigation to bring the perpetrators to justice”. Kiyawa added.
