An Area Court sitting in Jos, the Plateau State capital, on Thursday, sentenced a middle-aged man identified as Abdullahi Usman, to 12 months imprisonment after he was found guilty of enticing a married woman and blackmailing her.

While narrating the evidence in court, the police prosecutor, Inspector Ibrahim Gokwat, said the case was reported at the Angwan Rogo police station, on November 24, 2025, by one Mr Hamza Aliyu, the husband of the woman.

Gokwat said the accused, who is a neighbour to the family, had called the woman several times to meet him at a hotel for an amorous relationship, but when the woman declined, he resorted to blackmail by threatening to tell her husband that she was engaged in extra-marital affairs and had committed several abortions in the process.

The prosecutor told the court that when the woman reported the matter to her husband, they decided to record further conversations, which were presented as evidence in court.

Gokwat told the court that during the police investigation, Usman confessed to the crime and pleaded for forgiveness.

While delivering judgment, the presiding judge, Justice Irene Pati stated that the prosecution had proven its case beyond a reasonable doubt and therefore sentenced Usman to 12 months’ jail term but with an option of N50,000 fine.

She noted that though the accused had pleaded guilty to the two charges against him, the offences contravene the Plateau State Penal Code law of Northern Nigeria of 2017.
