Women have been called upon to push for equality, empowerment and a more enabling environment to thrive as the world celebrates the International Women’s Day.Speaking at a programme organised by Woman of Substance themed, ‘Accelerate action on the rights, equality, empowerment for women and girls’, held in Lagos on Friday, various female leaders highlighted persistent challenges women face and advocated for action against discrimination.
The speakers also emphasised the need for systemic change and inclusion.
The Executive Director of the Women Rights and Health Project, Bose Ironsi, stressed the importance of recognising and addressing gender-based discrimination.
She said, “Women have tried, they have struggled, and they have gone through all processes to make sure that things work out for them. Let us give women more enabling environments to thrive as individuals and human beings. We can only change the narrative if we agree that there is a problem, but right now, people are just comfortable with it.”
Ironsi also called for safeguarding policies to protect women at all levels, urging men to shift their perspectives on women and abandon the culture of impunity that allows discrimination to persist.
In her remarks, Ranti Ajayi, Clinic Manager for NORDICA Fertility Centre, highlighted the need for holistic empowerment, not just financial support.
She said, “We want women, especially in Nigeria, to be empowered, not just with money, but with knowledge. It is important for every woman out there to have knowledge, be empowered, and take action.”
She also pointed out cultural barriers that limit women’s progress, urging the society to break these restrictions and create opportunities for women to reach their full potential.
Similarly, the convener and Executive Director of Woman of Substance, Ify Onyegbule, emphasised the impact of stereotypes and patriarchy on women’s advancement.
She encouraged women to take initiative in their empowerment journey.
“The issues affecting women in society are there for us to see. The first thing is the stereotype, and this makes it difficult for women to strive. Also, the issue of patriarchy; we are looking at a way to bridge this gap and allow a level playing field for all.
“Women have a lot of roles to play, and when given the opportunity, they contribute immensely. However, no one may hand anything to them; they have to get out there, fight for their rights, and prove themselves,” she added. She also stressed the need for society to actively include women in all sectors, advocating for equality, equity, and empowerment.
