Abia appoints Anthony Atata to develop plan for cycling, talent development

Mr. Anthony Atata, a renowned sports lawyer and promoter, has been appointed as the Chair of the Abia State Cycling Association.

Atata’s primary responsibility will be to develop a comprehensive cycling plan that encompasses both recreational and professional cycling, aiming to produce top-notch cyclists from Abia State who can compete in local and international competitions.

During a press conference in Aba, Abia State, Atata outlined his immediate plans to integrate students from the three major tertiary institutions in the state into cycling programs. He also announced that talent hunt events will be organized for secondary school students, with the goal of identifying and nurturing future cycling stars for major international events.

Atata further stated that the association will initially focus on promoting two main categories of cycling time trials: road cycling and mountain cycling. “Cycling is an expensive sport, and we will work closely with sponsors to secure mutually beneficial sponsorship deals to support our cycling agenda,” Atata said.The newly appointed chair expressed his gratitude for the support from Governor Alex Otti, the highly experienced Commissioner for Sports, Nwaobilor Ananaba Nwadinma, and the Abia State Sports Council. “We are glad that they are deeply committed to taking sports to the next level in the state. Their support will make our work easier to deliver,” Atata added.

During the press conference, the new logo for Abia Cycling was also unveiled.

Anthony Atata is a well-known figure in the Nigerian sports community. He is the founder of Native Chiefs Cycling Club and has been instrumental in introducing cycling as part of lawyers’ sports activities during his tenure as the Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association Lagos Sports and Recreation Committee. Atata is also actively involved in promoting other sports, including table tennis, football, and tennis. He is the founder and promoter of the Lawyers Table Tennis Open (Mfon Usoro).

Apart from his sports-related activities, Atata is a practicing lawyer based in Lagos. He has served as the Chairman of the International Bar Association, African region, and the Chair of the Nigerian Bar Association Sports and Recreation Committee in Lagos.
