280 waterfront property owners get contravention notice

The Lagos State Government is set to issue contravention notice to over 280 property owners and occupiers in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme, located in the Eti Osa Local Government Area.

The move is in a bid to curb illegal encroachments on government land.

The government, last month, served contravention notice on over 200 property owners and occupiers in the Òkun Ajah Waterfront scheme in the Eti Osa LGA, over similar encroachment.

According to a Sunday statement by the spokesperson for the Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Dupe Ileyemi, a seven-day ultimatum will be given to the affected individuals, requiring them to provide relevant documentation and approvals that justify their occupation of the area.

The Commissioner, MWID, Yacoob Alebiosu, stressed that the 280 property owners, including completed, under-construction, and undeveloped lands, were found to be illegally occupying the government-owned land during a recent inspection of the area.

The commissioner therefore instructed the survey team to conduct a detailed technical assessment of the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme to determine the extent of development and encroachment in the area.

According to him, the assessment revealed that out of the 280 properties, 208 were buildings in various stages of construction, while 72 were undeveloped plots.

Alebiosu urged property owners to voluntarily remove their structures before the contravention notices would be served.

The commissioner said, “This unlawful activity must come to an end. The state government will no longer condone or accept people encroaching on government properties. We are currently cleaning Okun Ajah, then this Mayegun again, we will serve them contravention notice, and thereafter, the government will take appropriate steps.”
