NBA President, Osigwe, vows to hold govt accountable

The new President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Afam Osigwe (SAN), was sworn in on Thursday at a ceremony held at the Lagos Continental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Osigwe, a former General Secretary of the NBA, took over the mantle of leadership from Yakubu Maikyau (SAN), who led the association for the past two years.

Osigwe, the 32nd President of the NBA, in his inaugural address titled “Our Mandate,” outlined his vision for the association.

He said, “We face a multitude of challenges, from issues of justice administration and rule of law to socio-economic problems.

“As legal practitioners, we have a unique position in society to effect positive changes and uphold justice, equity, and fairness.

“We must ensure that the law serves all Nigerians, irrespective of their background, status or affiliation.”

Osigwe stated that his tenure would hold the federal and state governments accountable.

He said, “We will work towards ensuring that government policies and programmes align with the aspirations of Nigerians for good governance, transparency, and reduced cost of governance. We aim to prioritise the welfare of our people.”

Osigwe further promised that the NBA would advocate for government responsiveness to security, fundamental rights, employment, and basic amenities like food, shelter, education, and healthcare.

“Under my leadership, the NBA will be vocal and continuously address issues impacting the legal profession and justice administration. We will constructively engage with all tiers of government and stakeholders, presenting proposals and blueprints to tackle arising issues.

“As we take on the mantle of leadership, we are well aware of the enormous responsibilities that lie ahead. With your support and cooperation, we are confident we will turn challenges into opportunities for the growth and progress of our members,” he said.
