The Nigerian Institute of Quantity Surveyors (NIQS) has commenced the development of a comprehensive cost databank, which will enhance transparency, accountability in the construction sector, and allow effective monitoring.

NIQS President, Lawrence Nzekwe, who disclosed this at a national workshop organised by the institute themed, “Innovative and Sustainable Construction Practices: Building a Resilient Cost-Based and Knowledge-Driven Industry with Integrity”, said that the cost databank will help in ensuring that money spent on construction projects is accounted for, and that value for money is consistently achieved.

He observed that the profession is rooted in the principles of financial probity and accountability, which play an indispensable role in the lifecycle of all construction projects.

Nzekwe emphasised that quantity surveyors are positioned to ensure that projects are not only delivered on time and within budget but also that they meet the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.

He appealed to the government to involve quantity surveyors in construction projects across the country for accountability, and to ensure national resources are judiciously managed, as well as development goals are met with integrity and professionalism.

Nzekwe emphasised the critical role of quantity surveyors in ensuring that projects are delivered on time, within budget, and to the highest standards of efficiency and sustainability.

He noted that involving quantity surveyors in construction projects would ensure that national resources are judiciously managed and development goals are met with integrity and professionalism.

Nzekwe pointed out that the theme underscored the critical importance of knowledge, integrity, and innovation in fostering a sustainable construction industry and, by extension, a resilient nation.

“Over the years, our members have consistently demonstrated a commendable level of ingenuity and integrity. Through meticulous cost management and expert advisory, they have saved the nation from the wastage of scarce resources, thereby contributing significantly to national development.

“This workshop is designed to further empower our members, equip them with the latest knowledge and skills to work and expand their capacity to deliver even greater value to the nation,” he added.
