Five dead, 15 missing around Gamoda River in Jigawa boat accident

A boat accident on Thursday claimed the lives of no fewer than five persons around Gamoda River in Nahuce village, in the Taura Local Government Area of Jigawa State.

Confirming the tragedy in the Dutse area of the state, the state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Lawan Shiisu, in a statement on Friday, said the boat was conveying 20 passengers when it capsized around 12 pm.

He said, “Upon receipt of the report, a team of policemen in collaboration with local divers and good Samaritans rushed to the scene for a rescue mission.”

“Unfortunately, on arrival, five of the passengers, who were already dead, were identified as Abdurra’uf Mohd, 15, Suleman Ali, 20, Shafiu Mohd, 25, Ado Nafance, 75, and Alasan Mohd, 16, all of Taura LGA.”

Meanwhile, Shiisu disclosed that efforts were on to rescue the remaining missing passengers.

He also noted that the state Commissioner of Police, AT Abdullahi, commiserated with the victim’s families and prayed for the departed souls to have eternal peace.
