Delta building collapses, one dead, others injured

A tragic incident occurred in Asaba, the capital of Delta State, on July 27 when a section of a nine-storey building under construction collapsed, resulting in the death of one person and leaving several others injured.

According to eyewitness accounts, the deceased, identified as a bricklayer, was working with a cement mixer on the ninth floor when the walls suddenly crumbled, crushing him to death instantly. The incident has raised serious concerns about the safety measures and construction practices employed at the site.

Residents in the area have expressed their doubts about the quality of work and have questioned whether the building owner obtained the necessary approvals and permits before commencing the construction project. The concerns stem from the apparent lack of adherence to building regulations and the use of substandard materials, which may have contributed to the tragic collapse.

In response to the incident, Michael Anoka, the Delta State Commissioner of Urban Renewal, has ordered the immediate sealing of the building and has called for a thorough investigation to determine the cause of the collapse. The authorities have assured the public that they will take appropriate action against those found responsible for any negligence or wrongdoing that may have led to the loss of life and injuries.

This unfortunate incident comes just days after another building collapse in Lagos claimed the lives of five people, highlighting the urgent need for stricter enforcement of building codes and safety regulations across the country.

The Delta State government has expressed its condolences to the family of the deceased and has pledged to provide support to those injured in the incident.
