Court halts engineers’ election, okays caretaker panel

Justice Venchak Gaba of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court has restrained the Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE) from conducting its 2023 election slated for November 29 and 30.

He also barred Margaret Aina Oguntala (4th defendant) from parading herself as deputy president of the body pending hearing and determination of the substantive suit. The judge equally granted an order of interlocutory injunction restraining the 1st to 3rd defendants, their representatives, agents, privies, electoral panel, council and board of trustees and/or anybody acting through them from Oguntala’s inauguration slated for the new year. Justice Gaba, who fixed January 25, 2024 for hearing of the substantive suit, ordered that a caretaker committee should be installed to avoid a leadership vacuum. The order obtained by The Guardian yesterday, followed a motion on notice marked: M/490/23 and brought before the court on Friday, November 24, 2023, through Salisu Umar with A.A. Liman and Charles Ikechukwu on behalf of the claimant, Joseph Akinteye. In the substantive suit, marked: CV/158/21, the claimant, Akinteye, who was a contestant in the 2021 election, named the NSE, BOT chairman, Emeka Eze, chairman of 2021 election appeal, Charles Mbanefo and Oguntala as defendants.
