One Lukman Soladoye has told a Kaduna State Shari’a court sitting in Magajin Gari that he beats his wife, Kemi Soladoye, and their four children to correct them.
Mr Soladoye, when he appeared before the court on Tuesday to answer the charges of assault, explained that he loves his wife and children but beats them because he only wants the best for them.
B.A Tanko, counsel to the complainant, Mrs Soladoye, said she wanted a divorce because of the constant abuse but later changed her mind and settled with her husband.
She urged the judge, Isiyaku Abdulrahman, to warn her husband to stop hurting her and their children physically.
The judge then asked Mr Soladoye to promise to stop beating his wife and children.
The judge said, “If your wife does anything wrong to you, talk to her about it and show your displeasure; you are not supposed to beat your wife.
“As for your children, beating is not the only way to correct a child; always show love and affection to your children, pray for them and advise them.”
The judge also instructed the complainant to notify the court if her husband assaulted her again, warning that the
court would continue to keep an eye on the defendant’s behaviour.
