CJN inaugurates 58 new SAN as Supreme Court marks 2023/2024 new legal year

The Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Hon. Justice Olukayode Ariwoola, will swear-in 58 new Senior Advocates of Nigeria (SAN) on Monday, November 27th, 2023.

The swearing-in ceremony is part of events lined up to officially commence the 2023/2024 legal year of the Supreme Court. It will hold at 10:00am in the main courtroom.

According to a statement by the Supreme Court’s Director of Press & Information, Dr. Akande Festus, a total of 114 SAN applications were received this year. After screening exercises by the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), 58 candidates were confirmed – 57 advocates and 1 academic.

The CJN will deliver a state of the judiciary address, reviewing the previous legal year. The Attorney General of the Federation, Chairman of BOSAN, NBA President and others are expected to give speeches on the justice sector.

Though the Supreme Court resumed sitting on September 18th after its annual vacation, Monday’s ceremony will formally herald the new legal year as per tradition.

The successful SAN awardees will be conferred with the prestigious rank during the special court session. The judiciary reiterated that the selection process was rigorous, ensuring only deserving candidates scale through.
