Ajegunle area of Ikorodu, and its environs have lamented the extreme flooding in parts of the area due to days of heavy downpour. Consequently, they are calling on the government to help them in this time of need.
According to them, it has become a regular occurrence whenever it rains as the river in the area overflows and floods its surrounding areas, leaving residents homeless for weeks.
A resident in Community Avenue, Ayomide Oguneye, who expressed his concern over the flooding, said it has become a yearly occurrence whenever it rains.
According to him, “whenever the Bako river overflows, it leaves everywhere flooded, we have to put our legs into this water every day, which is dangerous.”
Another resident of Zion street, Dean Ibitoye, expressed his dismay over the flooding. He said: “ I’m a tailor but I can’t go to my shop because of the flood. Lots of my customers have been calling, I don’t even know what to tell them.
For Mrs. Ifeoluwa James, the flood has left them hopeless. She said: “We have been left homeless, there is water in our houses, we all had to move. Our properties have been damaged, we have been crying to the Government for a long time now, it is so unfair.”
Another resident of Zion street, Davies Barnabas expressed fears over the yearly flooding. He added: “We are scared of this yearly occurrence. Although the flood didn’t reach my house, we had to use a ferry to transport ourselves to dry land.”
When contacted, Director, Public Affairs, Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Adekunle Adesina, said the flood in Ajegunle was
affected by the recent release of water from Oyan Dam reservoir. He assured residents of relief as the water recedes.
