The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) President, Yakubu Maikyau, has condoled with the Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN) Justice Olukayode Ariwoola over the recent fire incident at the Supreme Court complex.

In a statement, Maikyau said the fire affecting some justices’ chambers raises concerns about court infrastructure safety nationwide. The NBA demanded an investigation to prevent future occurrences.

Maikyau also called for immediate appointment of additional Supreme Court justices to reach the full complement of 21 as mandated constitutionally. He noted Justice Amina Augie’s retirement has further depleted the overburdened bench.

The NBA President revealed ongoing engagement with stakeholders to enhance judicial remuneration. He said President Bola Tinubu has directed harmonizing recommendations to include in the 2024 budget.

Maikyau outlined new allowances proposed by the NBA for judicial officers’ unique demands. He added that delinking judges’ pay from civil service is crucial for reinforcing judicial independence.
