Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Gombe State branch, has taken swift action in response to allegations of assault on its chairman,

Benjamin Sati, by Inspector Kabiru Ibrahim of the police force. The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has led to the establishment of a seven-member committee to investigate the matter.

Sati claimed that Inspector Ibrahim verbally assaulted him, calling him “stupid” for parking in the wrong space. In response to this serious allegation, the Gombe State branch of the NBA convened an emergency congress on Friday to address the issue.

Announcing the resolution of the congress, the branch’s secretary, Abdumutalib Babawuro, stated that the newly formed committee would have one week to complete its investigation and submit recommendations. He also highlighted the

committee’s composition, emphasizing that it includes eminent personalities who are expected to ensure a fair and just examination of the incident.

“We are just coming out from an emergency meeting, and the Congress has unanimously resolved that we should constitute a committee. A committee of seven members to go and look into the matter and come back to the members in our next meeting,” Babawuro explained. “The committee is constituted of respected members of the bar who will do justice to the matter.”

Babawuro emphasized the branch’s expectations of the committee and urged members to have confidence in its ability to deliver a fair resolution. “We expect them as well-respected and senior members of the bar to go and engage all stakeholders and report back to the house. We gave them seven days as agreed by the congress,” he added.

In response to these developments, Commissioner of Police, Oqua Etim, expressed displeasure over Sati’s claims. He asserted that Sati had visited the bank as a customer and should have resolved the issue with the bank’s personnel internally, without involving the media.

“He (Sati) went to the bank as a customer and not as an NBA chairman, as such he should have obeyed the instruction of the officers on the ground,” Commissioner Etim stated. “If there is a problem between an employee in the bank and a customer, who do you report to? The manager? How does the press come into it?”

The investigation into this alleged assault will be closely watched, with many

expecting it to shed light on the incident and provide a basis for further action.
