Delta oil-producing communities threaten protests, shutdown of Chevron facilities

Niger Delta Itsekiri Oil Producing Communities has threatened a fresh shutdown of Chevron Nigeria Limited facilities in Olero, Dibi and Abiteye Fields in Delta State, over alleged failed promises by the oil company and Delta State Government.

The threat by NDIOPC was contained in separate letters addressed to the Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer of Chevron Nigeria Limited as well as the Governor of Delta State, Sheriff Oborevwori, copies of which were sighted by journalists in Warri, Delta State on Monday.

The NDIOPC letters stated that the Itsekiri host communities were vexed with the inaction of the management of Chevron Nigeria Limited and the Delta State Government regarding the purported “refusal to convert the VTP5/OTP2 and VTP6 graduates, to the staff of Chevron Nigeria Limited, 15 years after their employment, despite interventions by the Olu of Warri, Ogiame Atuwatse III”.

According to the letters, the VTP5/OTP2 and VTP6 graduates went through the recruitment process completing their one-year Ogere training programme.
