Silas Joseph Onu, a former member of the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the Nigerian
Bar Association (NBA), has publicly called for the immediate resignation of NBA President Y.C. Maikyau (SAN).
Onu’s call comes in response to revelations made in an audio recording where President Maikyau justified the unilateral appointment of his nephew as the ICT consultant to the NBA.
In the audio recording, President Maikyau admitted to appointing his family member as the ICT consultant, granting him access to the entire database of Nigerian lawyers, without the involvement or approval of the National Executive Committee. President Maikyau cited the
alleged misconduct of the former consultant as the reason for this decision. However, Onu raises concerns about the lack of proper procedures in addressing such issues.
Onu acknowledges the validity of removing a consultant for fraudulent activities, but emphasizes that there are established procedures for addressing such matters within the organization. He criticizes the handling of the situation, stating that the Association should not be managed as a personal enterprise. Onu suggests that the lack of transparency and proper procedures undermines the integrity of the upcoming 2024 elections within the NBA.
He further questions the implications of a trend where family members are brought into roles of authority within the organization, emphasizing the potential erosion of trust and integrity. Onu emphasizes his love for the NBA and his dedication to its collective interest, urging President Maikyau to step down due to his admission of unilaterally employing a family member to manage the sensitive NBA database.
The controversy surrounding the appointment has ignited discussions within the legal community about transparency, due process, and the importance of upholding the integrity of the NBA. As voices like Onu’s gain prominence, the spotlight remains on the actions and decisions of the
NBA leadership.
