Delta CJ freed nursing mother remanded for robbery

Delta State Chief Judge, Tessy Diai, yesterday, released 18-year-old woman, Beauty Obi, from the Warri Custodial Centre.

Justice Diai extended compassion to Obi, who delivered her baby two weeks ago through Caesarian Section (CS) following a passionate appeal from the deputy controller (DC) of the Warri Custodial Centre, Edo Lucky.

Lucky had narrated the pathetic situation of the teenage mother and her boyfriend that was admitted at the centre when she was pregnant.

According to him, when Obi was due for delivery she was taken to the Warri Central Hospital where she gave birth through CS, but the little child was placed in an incubator for a week before the baby was reunited with the mother in custody.

Lucky further disclosed that for the one week the child spent in the incubator, the prison authority was spending N1,000 per hour, which informed the appeal to the Chief Judge to grant her bail for proper care.

Justice Diai, who generously assisted the teenage mother with N20,000, granted her bail with N250,000.00 and one surety in like sum.

The surety must reside within the jurisdiction of the trial court, depose an affidavit of means and provide a national identity card as well as a National Identification Number (NIN).

Narrating her ordeal, the 18-year- old mother, who hails from Obingwa in Imo State, said she was arrested alongside her boyfriend where he was about to sell a stolen phone.

The teenage mother, whose mother hails from Kwale in Ndokwa West Local Council of Delta State, claimed that she was unaware of how her boyfriend got a phone of which she was charged for armed robbery.

Continuing, she claimed innocence of the armed robbery charge slammed against her, but thanked the CJ for the financial assistance.

The Chief Judge further discharged five of the 539 warrants of inmates reviewed, on the advice of the Director of Public Prosecutions that they had no case to answer.

They include: Lofore Difference, 37, Innocent Okpaghe, 37, Umukoro Kingsley, 51 and Chinago Wisdom, 29, who were charged with various offences, ranging from murder, armed robbery and kidnapping.

Earlier, the deputy controller of Warri Custodial Centre, said as at Monday, the centre had 1001 inmates, comprising 444

convicts and 557 awaiting trial inmates.
