The president of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Yakubu Mailkyau, SAN, OON, has called on Nigerian lawyers to take the lead in getting things right to ensure sustenance of the country’s democratic process.

The NBA president said this during the unveiling of the 2023 Annual General Conference with the theme: “Getting things Right, charting the course for Nigeria’s nation building.”

The website for the 2023 conference is www.nbaconference.com

In describing the symbols on the Logo, Maikyau SAN, said the ‘TICK’ on the logo means that Nigeria will get it right this time around.

He noted that the committee subsidized the fee to accommodate everyone.

“ This administration is committed to deliver first ever best conference of the NBA and the leadership of the AGCPC has given us the commitment that they will give us such conference and nothing less.

“The logo depicts the revolution that’s going to happen in this country and the “TICK”, is assuring Nigerians that we are going to get it right this time around.

“I take this liberty to declare upon the portal open for registration of 2023 general conference.

“We have endeavoured with the support of the Committee to ensure that the fees are pocket friendly to all our colleagues. We don’t want to use the fees to dissuade them from participating in the conference.”

The chairman of the 2023 Conference Planning Committee, Mazi Afam Josiah Osigwe SAN, also speaking on the registration said the portal is up and running and members can begin their registration immediately.

Osigwe, said, the conference is expected to help shape the reasoning of the incoming administration.

Senior members of the legal profession and lawyers over the age 70 will be registered free of charge

Over 15,000 delegates are expected attend the 63rd yearly general conference, AGC, scheduled to hold from 25 August to 1st of September, 2023 in Abuja.

“Concession was given to lawyers from 0-10 post call. 5% discount of the conference payable subject to participation in active CLE programs.

“This year’s conference has made it imperative that we identify those of this of us who are lawyers with disabilities.

“Concessions has also be granted to lawyers who are 70 years old and above not at the Bar.

“NBA should have an idea of how many of its members because concessions were made to them, so as to factor them for the planning purposes.

“We have chosen this year’s conference theme, because we genuinely want things to work rightly in the country.

“We hope for a better Nigeria, and we want to be like that proverbial child who took an umbrella to a prayer session against rain, but had explained that he only took an umbrella expectant that the prayers will be answered.

“We must be able to show how this nation can be built on a solid foundation.

“Just as we expect government to “work the talk” so also we lawyers are expected to also “work the talk”, to live by example, to be the change that we desire

He urged members to make use of the early bird registration because there will be no extension for that.

“Take good advantage of the early bird. It’s not going to be extended . Once we get to the end of it we are done with that phase,” Osigwe, SAN, noted.

The Alternate Chairperson of the the AGCPC, Mrs Oyinkan Badejo, said with God on their side the committee will ensure that the conference becomes a reference point.

“Make no mistakes, it is a daunting task to put together a conference of this magnitude and for the number of days.

“We have done it successfully for several years and we will make it better this year God being our helper and with your support.

“The ICT consultant whose company had handled the conference website and registration activities for the last six years is here and they have put together again this year a seamless website, very easy to navigate, and I have no doubts that as we speak people are already registering because as the chairman has said we will not be extending the early bird.

“We are here, our lines are open , the website is there, so engage with us; if there is anything that we are not addressing please engage with us so we can ensure that together we have a very good conference.” she said

The representative from the IT Consulting firm Crystal Digital, Nkiru Okeke, said they are ready to take In registrations.

“You only need to go to the website and type in your supreme court enrollment number and if you do not know that, you only need to type in your name and the rest of your details will follow suit

“If you are not a lawyer you will also be required to type in your name because you do not have a pre+saved data on the database.

“Essentially, what we have also done to make it seamless is that everyone who registered in 2021 or 2022, already have their data cached.

“So this means that the data is already saved on the database and you only need to login with the same email you used in 2021 or 2022 and make some few edit, upload your photograph and proceed to pay” she said

Reiterating the point on early bird, she stressed that the close of early bird is June 4 and urged all members to make haste and avoid all avoidable issies with “rush hour” or “last minute” registration.

On complaints, she moted that there is a helpline as well as different avenues to resolve complaints if need be, and these are all on the website.

“There is also a live chat on the website saying “We are here how may I help you” so you get immediate response to whatever issues you may have

“We

are ready to receive your registration” she said.
