The Resident Electoral Commissioner in Kwara State, Mallam Attahiru Madami, has warned against over-voting, saying it would be to the detriment of political parties.
The REC pointed out that election results at any polling unit recording over-voting would be cancelled and the presiding officer in charge of the polling unit prosecuted.
This was as he revealed that a total of 1,565,829 Permanent Voter Cards had been collected by voters in the state, adding that those were the people expected to vote in the general elections.
Madami stated this on Sunday when he featured on Diamond FM 88.7 programme titled “National Affairs,” monitored in Ilorin.
The REC said, “All the political parties will be punished because all the votes in the polling unit where over-voting is discovered will be cancelled while the polling officer will be handed over to the police. He will be prosecuted and jailed in accordance with the Electoral Act. I want to appeal to all the people that will be involved in the elections to be vigilant because anyone not accredited will not be allowed to vote.
“The political party agents should be vigilant and they should not allow those not accredited to vote. INEC is prepared to conduct a free, fair and transparent election that will be acceptable to the people.”
The REC revealed that a total of 215,078 PVCs had yet to be collected by voters in Kwara state.
He attributed the uncollected PVCs to human factors.
He said all the uncollected PVCs would be deposited at the vault of the Central Bank of Nigeria this week and would be there until after the election.
