Residents of Oju Odo, in the Ikotun area of Lagos State, have lamented the poor condition of the road linking Ikotun to other parts of the state. The road started falling apart after incessant rainfall in June 2022.
Our correspondent, who visited the area on Tuesday, observed that a large part of the road had collapsed into a canal.
Tyres were used to barricade parts of the road to prevent commuters from plying it and falling into the canal.
The road is a stone’s throw to the Alimosho Local Government Area Secretariat.
Residents, who spoke to our correspondent, lamented the condition of the road.
An official of the Lagos State Park Management, Ikotun, Momodu Aliyu, stated that the situation was getting worrisome, as many had narrowly escaped death.
He said, “The government should fix this road. It is already causing a lot of threats to commuters. Last week, a tricycle fell into the canal; thank God nobody died. The road has been like this for the past six months.”
A commercial driver, Ahmed Muyideen, told newsmen that the road had been difficult for motorists to ply, adding that relevant authorities had refused to intervene.
He said, “That place is dangerous. It is a two-lane road that is not wide enough to occupy more than one vehicle at the same time, but some drivers are always careless. Drivers that are not used to the area when driving at night might not know that that place is open and they might plunge into that canal. So, the lives of people are at risk. Speeding vehicles can even push people into the canal.”
A trader in the area, Adejumoke Abake, called on the state government to repair the road.
“We are pleading with them because of our lives; we cannot do without plying this road or doing business here,” she added.
The Chairman, Alimosho Local Government Area, Sulaimon Jelili, promised to react later.
He had yet to do so as of the time this report was filed.
The Lagos State Commissioner for Information and Strategy, Gbenga Omotosho, did not take his calls or respond to a text message as of press time.
