Experts urge enforcement of policy on building as antidote to flooding

President, Association of Consulting Architects Nigeria (ACANIGERIA), Ayoola Onajide, has linked the problem of climate change and flood in Nigeria to inability of the government to enforce building standards and codes.

He stated this, yesterday, during ACANIGERIA symposium and business forum with the theme: “Rethinking Buildings for Climate Change,” which took place at Federal Palace, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Onajide lamented that people just build houses anywhere and anyhow without considering the negative effect of their ignorance.

He hinged another problem on the fact that some lands are sand-filled and people put up structures on them without any infrastructure that would protect the place by the time the water that was chased away comes back.

The keynote speaker, Prof. Mansur Matazu, said that consideration should be given to designing buildings for energy efficiency and should be inculcated as part of design culture.

Another speaker, Chikezie Nwosu, said in putting up structures, symbiotic sustainability, as well as sustainable development goal, must be put into consideration.
