Lagos court jails three men for robbery

Justice I.R.B. Adebiyi of the Lagos State High Court sitting at Ikeja, Lagos State, on Tuesday, convicted and sentenced three men for armed robbery.

The convicts, Lanre Otunola, Toibu Oyeyinka and Jamiu Agboola, who were first arraigned on July 31, 2014, were convicted for conspiracy and armed robbery.

The convicts, on December 13, 2013, attempted to rob a couple of their cars in the Orile Iganmu area of the state.

They attempted the robbery with weapons, which the police and the prosecuting counsel could not provide as exhibits in court.

Before the judge delivered her judgment, counsel for the first and third defendants, N. Oduamaka, urged the court to temper justice with mercy.

“Your honour, the first and third defendants have been in custody since February 14, 2013, during which they have shown remorse for their actions. They are also first time offenders. Kindly show them mercy by granting them a lesser sentence,” he said.

Delivering judgment, Justice Adebiyi sentenced the three men to 21 years’ imprisonment for conspiracy and another 21 years for robbery.

She stated that the sentences would run concurrently, adding that the time the convicts had spent in custody would be deducted from the jail terms.
