Fintiri swears in Adamawa’s first female Chief Judge, Hafsat Abdulrahman

Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri has sworn in Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman as the first female acting Chief Judge in the state.

The governor, who acknowledges the outstanding qualities of the judge, charged her to go about her duty with integrity, dedication and honesty and to see her elevation as a call to service and the protection of democracy.

Fintiri made the remarks at the swearing-in ceremony of the chief judge in Yola, Adamawa.

Addressing the public at the occasion, Gov. Fintiri said “We stand at the threshold of history and I am honoured to be the first Governor of Adamawa State to nominate a Woman and a brilliant Judge to be sworn-in in an Acting capacity as Chief Judge of the state judiciary.

“This historic event represents a profound step forward for our state and Womenfolk who now see themselves reflected on our highest Court.

“I congratulate you on your appointment as the most senior Judge to take over “the mantle of leadership” in this temple of Justice and urge you to see your elevation as a call to service.”

Speaking further on the task and responsibilities ahead of the judge he said, “You must therefore discharge your duties with honesty, dedication and fairness at all times because you owe a duty to God and humanity.

“Because of your diverse and broad public service, and your appreciation of how critical it is for the justice system, I urge you to be guided by your calling and be fair and impartial in your decisions.

“I charge you to shun corruption and conduct yourself in ways that would inspire the confidence of members of the public in the justice system.

“I, therefore, want to reassure the judiciary that my administration would continue to give priority to your welfare, in recognition of your contributions to the stability of the society.”

The governor further tasked the judge saying, “From what I have been able to gather about you, you are an embodiment of hard work, grace, and perseverance and I believe your wisdom and experience, will make all of us proud in so many ways.

“I am happy that Honourable Justice Hapsat Abdulrahman succeeds another extraordinary brilliant jurist who has also devoted his life to public service.

“Retired Honourable Justice Nathan Musa’s integrity and Commitment to ensuring the transformation of the judicial system in the state, and justice for all have made him beloved by his colleagues and deeply respected. I thank him again for his many years of exemplary service.

“As the nation heads to the polls next year, it is important to consider what role the judiciary will play in ensuring that the elections are free, fair and credible. For the Courts to perform their job effectively, including resolving election related conflicts, they must be seen to be neutral, the people must have trust, confidence and faith in their judgements.

“This comes from a general belief and understanding that adhering to the Courts ruling is the right thing to do. To safeguard this legitimacy, Judges must function and be seen as officials of the Judiciary, and not as representatives of the ethnic group to which they belong, because an efficient, equitable and accessible justice system is the foundation of a democracy based on the rule of law.

“I wish you the very best in this journey and urge you to continue to do your best and to do justice according to the law. You must continue to develop yourself and have thirst for knowledge.

“I congratulate you for being the first woman to achieve this feat in the state and wish you a great service career.”
