To attract more commercial activities and improve on revenue generation, Eti-Osa East Local Council, has relocated traders to the new market in Addo community at Soled Omole street Addo, Ajah, Lagos.
The traders said they relocated following orders from the council six months ago. Before the relocation, the old market, situated in ldi-lroko street, opposite Jacob Plaza road, near Addo roundabout was usually overcrowded. Traders often complain of accidents, traffic, lack of waste management and extortions from street urchins. A market woman, Mrs. Adeola Morgan, popularly called Mama Joshua, said that they hesitated to move out when the council asked them to vacate the old market place, because of the N6 million cost for a shop in the new market. She stressed that they didn’t believe that the old market would be demolished, until it was done three months ago, which forced them to relocate to the new market and today, they are enjoying the new market. A trader, Abas Hazeem, lamented the high cost of shops in the new market. Hazeem said he bought two open shops for N1.2 million for his wife. The market opens from 6:00a.-8:00p.m. daily with maximum security. Commending the layout of the market, a trader, Aina Emmanuel, advised residents to patronise people in the new Addo market because of its good organisation. The facilities in the new market were top notch as there were open shop-(shops) lock shops, spaces in the market, refuse dump site outside, car parks, toilets facilities, regular electricity and water. Also, available are tricycles, which take customers and traders from the old market site to the new site for as low as N50. Another trader, Baba Oloja lamented that “there are no vacant shops now except the ones left for the politicians.” “You can only get shops now by either buying or renting from 3rd parties, because you are coming rather late,” he said.
