Lagos Govt moves to reduce climate change impacts

The Lagos State Governor, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has said the challenges posed by climate change should be tackled in partnership with donor organisations to cut across the waste, transportation, and energy sectors.

The governor stated this on Tuesday during the ninth edition of the Lagos State Climate Change Summit, which was held on Victoria Island.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by his Deputy, Dr Obafemi Hamzat, disclosed that effects of climate change have been particularly felt by women, children, and vulnerable groups, hence the need to take the needed actions.

He said, “We are in constant discussion with our development partners and donor organisations to find solutions and ways to better adapt to climate impacts, especially as they affect women, children, and people with disabilities in terms of provision of water; food security; energy, and healthcare services.

“I implore participants to look critically into sectors such as waste, transportation, energy, housing, and food systems for the proper economic dimension, meeting global environmental and social standards and ecosystem restoration targets.

“Global climate change is not a future problem; it is affecting every country in every continent and disrupting national economies and affecting lives, costing people, communities, and countries dearly.”

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, in his address noted that 26 initiatives are highlighted by the state Climate Action Plan to achieve zero carbon emission by 2050.

“Lagos is the only state in the country that has developed and commenced the implementation of her CAP in Nigeria and there are 26 initiatives highlighted in the plan which cut across adaptation and mitigation actions to advance a sustainable low carbon economy to achieve net zero by the year 2050,” he said.
