Lagos govt plans summit to tackle climate change

The Lagos State Government has said the state’s annual Climate Change Summit would be held as part of its efforts to attain a green economy and ensure environmental sustainability.

The state Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, disclosed this on Wednesday during a press briefing held in Alausa, Ikeja.

He said, “Our preparations are in full gear to hold the ninth edition of the Lagos State climate change summit which will take place from August 2-3, 2022 during which Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu will be the special guest of honour. We will partner with the organised private sector as this is in recognition of their impact on economic growth and our resolve to mainstream climate action.

“This is also affirmative action in support of the role of the private sector in mitigating the effects of climate change and we are committed to accelerating the development of a green economy in the state by employing innovative climate solutions and mobilising necessary resources required to achieve the target.”

Bello explained that resolutions from past climate change summits have aided the government in efforts to attain zero carbon emission.

“Other countries who have come together to develop plans to tackle climate change through the creation of zero carbon emission gave themselves lengthy years to achieve it and I am happy to announce that research is ongoing in the state to attain zero carbon emission and much resolutions have been made from our past summit,” he added.
