Residents of Isheri-Oshun/Jakande Estate have called on Lagos State government to complete the abandoned canal it started last December in the community. The community leaders, who spoke with The Guardian expressed fears that the situation at the canal may get worse with the heavy downpour. Chairman of Peace Home Valley Estate Community Development Area (CDA), Ikechukwu Ezeonyeka, said though, the community supports and stands with the State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources on the construction of drainage system 6E, Oshodi/Isolo Local Council, they want to see the contractor back to the site. He said: “We appreciate the government and the ministry for the construction of the channel by Messrs Worthwhile Venture Limited, which is aimed at eradicating flood at Oke-Afa, Bucknor and Ejigbo communities. “We the residents of Peace Home Valley Estate CDA and Unity Estate CDA as the bonafide beneficiary of the project, wish to extend our support and stand with the ministry on the ongoing construction and ministry enforcement to effect the removal of contravention along the drainage route, according to the 2014 chart and alignment marking by the then Drainage Director, Engineer Enrile and Engineer Ajadi and Surveyor Akorede. “As a community, we dissociate ourselves from any protest press release and court process by the individual residents that are blocking the channel route. “We know the effort we have made to attract this project and it must not be in vain. “The government should finish the project that has been abandoned since April 2022. We are begging them to come and do the needful. “It is the rainy season and residents are groaning because of the flood. We were told that the contractor cannot work where there is contravention and that such has to be removed by the ministry. “Ever since the contractor promised to resume we are yet to see them back on site.” On his part, Michael Odeigah said: “Whenever it rains, residents groan. We have done our best to make the contractor come back to site but we are yet to get a response from them. They have started a good job and we are grateful, but they should return and complete it.”
