An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate’s Court, Ado Ekiti, has ordered a 55-year-old woman, Idowu Abereoje, to be remanded in the Nigeria Correctional Centre, Ado Ekiti, over the alleged murder of a 28-year-old man, Olarewaju Abere.
The police prosecutor, Inspector Elijah Adejare, said the defendant committed the offences of conspiracy and murder on April 19, 2022, in Ilawe Ekiti.
“The offences contravene sections 324 and 319 (1) of the Criminal Code Cap. C. 16, Laws of Ekiti State, 2012,” Adejare added.
He asked the court to remand the defendant “to allow the police to complete their investigation and send the duplicate case file to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.”
In his statement to the police, an eyewitness said, “There was a misunderstanding between the accused person and the deceased. Idowu held the clothes of the deceased; people attempted to separate them and begged her to leave his clothes, but she refused, saying she would show her true colour to the deceased. She later called one of her children, now at large, who later came with a knife.
“He stabbed the deceased at the back and later joined his mother in beating the deceased till he became unconscious. He was rushed to a nearby hospital and from there, he was referred to the Ekiti State University Teaching Hospital, Ado Ekiti, but died before they got to Ado Ekiti.”
In his ruling, the magistrate, Tomiwa Daramola, said, “I am of the firm view that the prosecutor’s application to remand the defendant is genuine.
“The defendant is hereby ordered to be remanded for 30 days pending the conclusion of police investigation and a duplicate case file is ordered to be sent to the DPP, Ministry of Justice, Ekiti State, for legal advice.”
Daramola adjourned the case till May 5 for mention.
