AJAH - What could have been a major fire incident at the popular Eleganza plaza, opposite Victoria Gardens City in Lekki area of Lagos State was on Saturday averted as a result of early intervention by residents, a police woman and area boys.

The Eleganza plaza houses Grandville Trauma centre, I Fitness centre , Eleganza Strip Mall , Grandville Trauma Centre, Gate Gold Sports Shop, Yonko”s Care Spa and Eleganza shops mall among other offices. The Guardian learnt the fire started at about 4:00p.m when an explosion was heard near a generator house inside the plaza. An eyewitness said there was panic when they saw a thick cloud of smoke with fire coming from the ceiling of the building near the generator house behind the Fitness centre and generator house. Although, the cause of the fire is yet to be ascertained, some sources alleged that a technician had worked on a leaking gas cylinder earlier near the generator and left in the morning.

Others alleged that another man went to the diesel generator after lights went off before the incident. The Guardian gathered that the early intervention of residents, street boys and a female traffic warden, who had closed from duty saved the day by fetching to stop the fire. They were assisted by Grandville Trauma Centre, which provided fire fighting cylinders with chemicals.Some were taking selfies and uploading pictures on social media, while others were crying and wailing for help. However, families and patients in the emergency unit in a nearby hospital panicked and were in shock when they saw the fire and heavy smoke close to the generator house. The owner of the hospital, identified simply as Mr. Ayo was around to ensure there was safety and calm. He was able to control the staff and mobilised help from the hospital’s fire agent to put out the fire.The firefighters arrived after an hour when the fire had been put out.
