A 25-year-old man, identified only as Olanrewaju, has been arrested by the police in Warri, Delta State, for allegedly raping a seven-year-old girl at Ajanimoga in the Warri South Local Government Area of the state.
That Olanrewaju is the son of the caretaker of the compound where the victim lives with her family.
The girl reportedly stated that the suspect dragged her into his room where he forcefully had carnal knowledge of her.
He also allegedly threatened to kill her if she told anyone about what happened between them.
However, the child was said to have reported the incident as soon as she was safely away from the suspect.
Co-tenants of the victim, who spoke to journalists on the incident, said the suspect’s father had vowed to get him out of the case.
The victim’s father, who asked not to be identified, said the caretaker had threatened to deal with his family.
A human rights activist, Mr Kelvin Ejumudo, said the suspect would not go unpunished.
Ejumudo, while confirming the threat to the child’s family, promised to ensure their safety.
“Justice is for everyone, whether poor or rich,” he added.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Bright Edafe, could not be reached for comments as of the time of filing this report.
