Traditional leaders and members of Koko community in Warri North Local Council of Delta State, yesterday, protested against alleged incessant arrest of residents of the town.
The peaceful protest, which started at about 9:00a.m. on Sunday morning, had the Olare-Aja of Koko, Pa. Richwell Atsenuwa, members of the Elders Council, women and the youths brandishing placards with various inscriptions.
The protesters alleged that the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Koko Police Station is causing crisis and perverting justice in their community and called for his immediate redeployment from the sleepy town,
Addressing newsmen during the protest, Pa. Atsenuwa, alleged that the DPO in charge of their community is shielding some suspects, who were fingered in an attempted murder case.
He added the Inspector-General of Police (IGP) is aware of the matter and has directed that the case be charged to court, wondering about what the DPO’s interest is, in shielding some persons, who were meant to be charged to court.
The Olare-Aja said: “We want the DPO to be posted out of Koko Community, because he is the one causing crisis in Koko. The DPO is shielding some persons ,who are meant to be charged to court for an attempted murder as recommended by the Inspector-General of Police.
“Instead, the DPO is framing up innocent residents of Koko for arrest, to prevent the community from prosecuting the suspects, who brought armed thugs to attack the community.”
Attempts to reach the Delta State Police Public Relations Officer in Asaba for comment was unsuccessful at the time of filing the report.
