Personnels of the Ondo State Waste Management Authority have arrested more than 80 residents over alleged violation of the state environmental law.

The culprits were apprehended last Saturday in different parts of Akure, the state capital, during the monthly environmental sanitation.

The General Manager of the agency, Mrs Ayo Adeyemo, stated these while speaking to journalists after the exercise.

Adeyemo expressed dissatisfaction with the attitude of residents towards the cleaning of their environment.

She said, “We are not impressed because people did not comply. They were burning refuse and some were holding church services, which should not be.

“Environmental sanitation should be a time people keep their environment clean, not conducting programmes in churches.

“Also, some people were selling things. They did not even care; maybe because we didn’t hold environmental sanitation last December because it was a festive period.

“Drivers were also loading in motor parks. Apart from loading, their surroundings were filthy, unhealthy and littered with waste.”

It was gathered that those arrested were arraigned before an Akure Magistrate’s Court.
