A Lagos State Magistrates’ Court in Yaba on Tuesday granted bail to five pupils of Dowen College, Lekki, detained over the controversial death of their colleague, 12-year-old Sylvester Oromoni (Junior).
The news of Sylvester’s death went viral following a social media post by his cousin, Perry Oromoni, who alleged that some senior pupils of the college beat him up in his hostel because he refused to join a cult.
But the school denied the claim, stating that the boy complained of leg pains following an injury he sustained while playing football.
The state government, however, ordered the indefinite closure of the school pending the outcome of an investigation into the matter, while officials of the Lagos State Ministry of Education also sealed the premises of the school.
The Falana and Falana Chambers, on behalf of the family, petitioned the chief coroner of Lagos State demanding an inquest into the death.
The Lagos State Police Command, however, detained five pupils and three housemasters of the school.
On December 9, the pupils were detained in a juvenile home.
However, Magistrate Olatunbosun Adeola, on Tuesday, granted the pupils bail in the sum of N1m each with two sureties in like sum following a charge of conspiracy and homicide.
The magistrate, who heard the bail application, ordered that one of the sureties of the pupils must be their parent and must swear to an affidavit of compliance.
She also noted that the passports of the defendants must be submitted to the court and that their residence must be verified by the prosecutor.
The pupils were ordered to stay within 2 kilometres of their residence at all times.
