Ballason sues el-Rufai, NCC, others over telecoms shutdown

Human Rights Lawyer, Gloria Ballason, has sued the Kaduna State governor, the Nigerian Communications Commission, and five telecommunications companies over shutdown of telecom services and internet.

It would be recalled that the Kaduna State Government had on September 30 announced the cut off of telecommunication services to some Local Government Areas over rising increase of insecurity having earlier claimed that the shutdown was a rumour.

According to the suit filed at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the lawyer alleged that the action taken by the governor was not backed by law and violated her rights and it did not satisfy the constitutional provision of any law.

The human rights lawyer disclosed that more lives who could not call for help from security agents perished while businesses and means of livelihood of citizens were grossly affected by the shutdown of the telecoms networks in the state.

The suit also called the Nigerian Communications Commission, an independent national regulatory body established by law, to answer the question of whether it was answerable to the governor of Kaduna State.

She said her litigation work, online HOJRADIO/TV and annual House of Justice Summit & Banquet were greatly affected by the shutdown while Kaduna residents whose rights were violated due to the network shutdown suffered astronomic loses without a commensurate improvement in the security situation in Kaduna State.

Our correspondent report that others sued in the suit include the Attorney General of Kaduna State, Airtel Networks Limited, Globacom Limited, 9mobile and MTN.
