The Chief Judge of Osun State, Adepele Ojo, has released eight awaiting trial inmates from the two custodial centres in the state.
A statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Osun Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Olusola Adeotan, on Saturday said Justice Ojo released the inmates during her visit to Ilesa and Ile-Ife Correctional Centres.
Ojo, who pledged that the judiciary would do its best to decongest custodial centres in the state, added that all deserving inmates would be considered.
On the reason behind the visit to the custodial centres, Ojo said, “My desire to perform my statutory duties required of me under the law, as well as the pressure from the Controller of Corrections, Osun State Command, borne out of his feeling for fellow human beings.”
Speaking earlier, Controller of Corrections, Osun Command, Olanrewaju Amoran, said the prison visit would douse tension and decongest the custodial facilities.
Pleading with the Chief Judge to make the visit more frequent, Amoran charged the released inmates to turn a new leaf and utilized all the values inculcated in them while in the custody.
The statement said 5 inmates regained freedom from the Ilesa Custodial Centres, while three others from Ile-Ife Centre were also released.
