• NANS seeks improved funding of education in South-West states
A Legal icon, Chief Wole Olanipekun (SAN), has said Nigeria is reversing instead of progressing because of its constitution, adding that until the nation’s laws are totally overhauled, redrafted and replaced, it may not be free from its present woes.
He said that the constitution was not amendable and that a new one is needed for the nation to grow.
The Senior Advocate of Nigeria spoke yesterday while delivering the 13th convocation lecture of the Redeemer’s University with the topic: “Beyond The Pandemic: Creating An Evolving New Normal,” at the university’s auditorium.
He said the Federal Government needed to devolve powers to states, adding that Nigeria should restructure to ethnic nationalities or regions.
Olanipekun, who stated that no government in the world controls everything like it is in Nigeria, said the state governors had been rendered as beggars to the government at the centre because they lack power.
“For now, Nigeria is functioning, not too disproportionate from the way it has been designed to function by those who imposed the present constitution on us. Every properly functioning nation has a master plan, which is ingrained in its constitution. The present normal, which is virtually landing us in a conundrum, is that we are bedevilled with a constitution, which in its very essence and content does not represent any honest, genuine and sincere constitution,” he said.
MEANWHILE, the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has advocated improved investment in educational infrastructure across the South-West states for improved research, scholarship, innovation, and quality education.
The student’s body also lauded the Ekiti State Governor, Dr. Kayode Fayemi’s investment in education in the state, describing it as a benchmark and reference point for the sector.
The NANS leadership, under the auspices of the South-West NANS /Joint Campus Committee Chairmen, stated this after a facility tour of all state-owned institutions to appraise the level of investment of the state in the educational sector.
A statement in Ado-Ekiti, yesterday, by Ekiti NANS/ JCC Chairman, Mr. Olanrewaju Olamide, described the tour as part of the renewed effort of the NANS to advocate improved investment in educational infrastructure across the South-West for improved research, scholarship, innovation and quality education.
It maintained that the feat by the current administration in Ekiti State if sustained by subsequent governments, could veritably serve as a good model for other states of the federation.
