Personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Services Armed Squad have repelled an attack to set a yet-to-be-identified inmate free in Lagos State.
That the inmate, who was brought to the Lagos State High Court, TBS, for hearing, was on the premises of the court when his alleged associates attacked the personnel to get him released.
The spokesperson for the NCS, Lagos, Rotimi Oladokun, said the vigilance of the escorts thwarted their efforts, adding that security reinforcement was immediately deployed in the court to prevent a breakdown of law and order.
He stated that all inmates were returned to secure custody, adding that one of the attackers sustained bullet injuries during the incident.
Oladokun said, “A security breach was averted at the Lagos State High Court in TBS by personnel of the Nigerian Correctional Service Armed Squad.
“Persons suspected to be associates of an inmate taken to the Lagos High Court for hearing staged an attack on the escort personnel with an attempt to forcefully release the inmate while on the premises of the court.
“However, the quick response and vigilance of the NCoS court escorts thwarted their effort. During the ensuing melee, one of the attackers was shot while trying to dispossess an armed officer of his rifle.”
