There was pandemonium at Toyota Bus Stop along Apapa/Oshodi Expressway, Lagos State, yesterday when a hit-and-run driver killed a young man while crossing the highway.
An eyewitness, Mike Onyeka, said the victim was crossing the road when a vehicle hit him and he died instantly.
According to him, the vehicle was at high speed, when it hit him, threw him up and he landed on the road with his head. He died instantly while the driver zoomed off. Onyeka said: “I saw the man. He wanted to cross to the Mile 2 side of the expressway when the vehicle hit him. We have to remove his sim card from his phone and use it to make calls to contact his family.
Another eyewitness, Ifeanyi Ibe, said the victim has a shop in the market. He said: “He was a trader here in this market. We regret his demise, which is the reason we have been asking for a pedestrian bridge at Toyota Bus Stop to reduce the number of people dying while trying to cross the expressway.
“We call on Lagos State Government to come and construct a pedestrian bridge here for us. We pay our taxes into the government’s coffers. So, we have the right to demand infrastructure that will benefit us.” Contacted, Aswani Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Adeleke Ojajuni, promised to reach out to Mushin division on the issue.
