Climate change through city planning will reduce carbon emission – Sanwo-Olu

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, on Monday said his administration was tackling the challenge of climate change through proper city planning to reduce carbon emission.

Sanwo-Olu, who was represented by the Secretary to the State Government, Mrs Folashade Jaji, said this at an event to commemorate the 2021 World Habitat Day in Alausa, Ikeja.

The programme with the theme, ‘Accelerating Proper Action for a Carbon-free World,’ was organised by the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development.

Sanwo-Olu said, “Undoubtedly, our own example in Lagos State is a clear case of resilience and innovation in tackling environmental issues. Through compact city planning, we have been able to attain carbon emission reduction by targeting housing, transport, energy and waste management sectors and others.

“As a result, we have revived our economy by adopting energy-saving alternatives as a decisive step towards reducing carbon footprints in Lagos State.”

The governor added that city planning and management were keys to reducing climate change in cities.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Mr Idris Salako, said, “Climate change heavily impact infrastructure, access to facilities and quality of lives in cities. We must intensify awareness and sensitise the public.

“Also, estate surveyors, architect, builders and developers should use power-generating plants with low carbon emissions.”
