Nigerian governors elected on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) have voted for the zoning of the party chairmanship to the north.

PDP governors reached the decision on Wednesday at Akwa Ibom governor’s residence in Abuja where they voted 9-3 in favour of the north.

The governors decision suggests that PDP’s presidential candidate for the 2023 election may come from the southern region of Nigeria.

The meeting resolved to pass the resolution of the governors to the zoning committee of the national convention, currently scheduled to take place on October 30 and 31 in Abuja.

PDP governors at the meeting include Bala Mohammed (Bauchi), Adamu Fintiri (Adamawa) and Darius Ishaku (Taraba), Samuel Ortom (Benue), Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, governor of Sokoto State, Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Godwin Obaseki (Edo), Nyesom Wike (Rivers), Udom Emmanuel (Akwa Ibom), Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi (Enugu), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Ifeanyi Okowa (Delta), and Douye Diri (Bayelsa).

Nigeria’s ruling party All Progressives Congress (APC), which the PDP aims to take over power from, is yet to make a decision on its own ticket amid scuffles between the south and north over which region should produce a successor to President Muhammadu Buhari in 2023.

Nigeria’s Southern governors demanded that the next president should come from the south.

However, their northern counterparts have insisted that voters should be allowed to decide and stated that the idea of a rotational presidency in Nigeria was unconstitutional.
