Okowa mourns as Supreme Court loses an hon. justice at 67

Delta State Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

The Supreme Court of Nigeria on Tuesday announced the death of one of its Justices, Justice Samuel Oseji at the age of 67.

He was said to be among the eight Justices of the Supreme Court that were sworn-in on Friday November 6 , 2020.

Oseji was said to have died at the National Hospital, Abuja, where he had been receiving medical attention.

A statement by the Director of Press and Information, Dr Festus Amande, in Abuja confirmed the death.

Justice Oseji who hailed from Idumuje Unor in the Aniocha North Local Government of Delta State, was born in Jos, Plateau State on June 2, 1954.

Okowa cancels engagements

Meanwhile, the Delta State Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, has expressed sadness on the demise of Oseji.

Okowa, in a statement by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Mr Olisa Ifeajika, on Tuesday, described the late Oseji as a quintessential and intellectual jurist whose pronouncements on the bench had advanced the course of justice delivery in Nigeria.

He was quoted as saying, “The news of his death came to me as a great shock and I send my heartfelt condolences to his wife, Dr Minnie Oseji, a Permanent Secretary in the civil service of Delta State, the family and people of Aniocha North Local Government Area, and Idumuje-Unor community in particular, as well as his colleagues at the Supreme Court.”

The statement added that Okowa on Tuesday “cancelled all official engagements for the day in honour of the late Judge of the Supreme Court, Justice Samuel Oseji.”
