Residents of Uyo metropolis in Akwa Ibom State have decried flooding of some parts of Uyo metropolis occasioned by the downpour on Saturday.
The affected areas include Idoro Road by Julius Berger junction, Atiku Abubakar Way, Ikot Oku Ikono and Udo Umanah streets.
One of the victims of the flood who is also a landlord, Mr Udimisor, told newsmen on Monday that his compound and several others were submerged during the downpour.
“I have been living in the compound for the past five years and I have not experienced this kind of flood before. The rain started from 9am and last for seven hours. The entrance to my compound turned to a river as nobody could either come in or moved out; we were trapped for hours “
Another victims of the flood, Mr Ifiok Ezekiel Udo, lamented that the flood damaged the backyard fence of his compound and collapsed the soak away.
“Now I need more than N200,000 to restore the fence and fix the soak away,” he said.Residents of Udo Umanah and adjoining streets within the area had similar experiences as buildings in the area were submerged
However, the state commissioner for Environment and Mineral Resources, Mr Charles Udoh, said drainage controlled projects had been undertaken by the state government to reduce flooding.
“I am not aware of this area being ravaged by flood. Once I have official report from, government would act accordingly,” he said.
