Ondo: Ilaje, Ese-Odo deprived electricity, Senator laments 14-year blackout, demands action

THE Senate on Tuesday lamented the 14-year blackout in the Ondo South Senatorial District and asked the Niger Delta Development Commission to complete the power project meant to provide electricity to the areas.

The upper chamber urged the NDDC to, as a matter of urgency, complete the installation of a transmission substation in Okitipupa LGA that would supply electricity to Ilaje, Ese-Odo, Okitipupa, Irele and Odigbo LGAs

The Senate decision was sequel to a motion by the representative of the area in the red chamber, Senator Nicholas Tofowomo.

Tofowomo lamented that 90 per cent of his people had been deprived of electricity supply since 2007.

He said, “The situation is embarrassing and despicable because I continue to wonder if Ondo South is part of Nigeria because suffering from electricity blackout for about 14 years has grounded many economic activities in the district.”

He noted that an intervention came from the NDDC in 2012 when the agency awarded a contract for 132KV transmission and 132KV/33KVsubstation in Okitipupa LGA.

Tofowomo said, “As of today, 85 per cent of the job has been completed and all the 145 transmission line towers from Omotosho Power Station to the substation has been completed.”
