Yobe Govt resolves 316 communal cases through customary conflict resolution committee

Yobe State Government through its local conflict resolution mechanism, ‘Alternative Dispute Resolution Committee’ popularly known as ‘Zauren Sulhu’ has resolved a total of 316 communal cases in the last six months.

The Chairman of the Committee who doubles as the Special Adviser to Governor Buni on Religious Affairs, Ustaz Babagana Mallam Kyari disclosed this at a Strategic Session for the Development of Transitional Justice Framework and Protocols, organized by the National Human Rights Commission holding in Jimeta, Adamawa State.

Kyari explained that Yobe State Government, under the leadership of Governor, Mai Mala Buni had in consideration of the importance attached to peaceful co-existence and protection of human rights decided to constitute the committee with the mandate of resolving disputes among disagreeing parties and put them in agreement devoid of litigation.

He said the committee has 29 members at the state level comprising of security personnel, legal experts and erudite religious scholars and 383 members at the local government levels that mediate, mitigate and resolve disputes among disagreeing parties in communities.

Kyari who described the meeting as timely, also noted that, since the Committed was constituted on 16th February 2021 as well as its subsequent inauguration on 4tu March, 2021; more than 316 cases across the 17 of the state were resolved by local government committees.

He said within the period, the committee did not stop at resolving disputes between Muslims only, but also resolved disputes between non-Muslims in the state based on the Islamic legal system.
